Ingredient notes

All-purpose flour: This recipe has not been tested with other types of flour.

Rolled oats: Adds a crispy texture to the crumble.

Berries: Adds moisture and texture to the loaf.

Sugar: Sugar is not just for sweetness. It affects moisture, structure and overall flavor.

Butter: Melted butter is used to make the crumble topping.

Lemon juice: To balance the sweetness in the filling.

Corn starch: Used to help thicken the filling.

Vanilla extract: Enriches the overall flavor and balances the sweetness.

For the rest of the ingredients, please see the recipe index card below!

Can I make this crumble gluten-free?

Yes, replace the all-purpose flour with 1:1 gluten-free baking flour.

What is the difference between crumble, crisp and cobbler?

Crumble: A crumbly, buttery streusel topping made from flour, butter an sugar.

Crisp: Similar to cobbler, it always includes oats and sometimes nuts for an extra crunchy texture.

Cobbler: A cobbler recipe has a biscuit-like, scone style or cake batter topping spread over a fruit filling.

How to make Triple Berry Crumble

The section below is a quick overview of how to make this recipe. For the full recipe details, see recipe index card below!

Prep the fruit

Preheat to 375°F. Grease a 9”×13” inch baking dish with butter on all sides. Toss the frozen berries, sugar, flour, lemon juice and vanilla together. Pour into the baking dish.

Make the crumble topping

Mix oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon and salt. Stir in the melted butter and vanilla until the mixture forms chunky crumbs. Sprinkle over the baking dish.

Bake

Bake for 50-60 minutes until the berries are bubbling around the edges and the topping is golden brown. Best served warm with ice cream.

Expert tips from my test kitchen

Use seasonal fruit

Frozen fruit is easily accessible but you can use seasonal fresh fruit.

Don’t overmix the topping

Stir the crumble just until the ingredients come together. Keeping some larger pieces creates better texture.

Why is my berry crumble watery?

Extra juicy berries release a lot of juices during baking. Corn starch helps thicken the filling. Allow the crumble to rest after baking so the juices can thicken.

Can I make this crumble ahead of time?

You can assemble the fruit filling the night before and refrigerate until ready to bake. The texture of the crumble topping will change due to the hardening of the softened butter. For best results, make the crumble topping just before baking.

Can I use fresh berries?

Fresh or frozen berries work well in this recipe. Fresh berries are delicious when in season while frozen berries make this an east dessert to prepare year round. Fresh berries bake faster while frozen berries need a little extra time to bake and bubble.

How to store leftover crumble

This easy berry crumble dessert is best served fresh and warm. Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave for a few minutes before serving.
