Expert tips from my test kitchen
Use seasonal fruit
Frozen fruit is easily accessible but you can use seasonal fresh fruit.
Don’t overmix the topping
Stir the crumble just until the ingredients come together. Keeping some larger pieces creates better texture.
Why is my berry crumble watery?
Extra juicy berries release a lot of juices during baking. Corn starch helps thicken the filling. Allow the crumble to rest after baking so the juices can thicken.
Can I make this crumble ahead of time?
You can assemble the fruit filling the night before and refrigerate until ready to bake. The texture of the crumble topping will change due to the hardening of the softened butter. For best results, make the crumble topping just before baking.
Can I use fresh berries?
Fresh or frozen berries work well in this recipe. Fresh berries are delicious when in season while frozen berries make this an east dessert to prepare year round. Fresh berries bake faster while frozen berries need a little extra time to bake and bubble.
How to store leftover crumble
This easy berry crumble dessert is best served fresh and warm. Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave for a few minutes before serving.
